I DOCK

real-time sound installation

2024

Photography by Hendrik Zeitler.

Positioned with a panoramic view of Gothenburg’s bustling harbor, I Dock captures the rhythmic movements of the maritime world just outside the window. It dynamically translates the real-time activity of passing vessels into an enveloping soundscape, allowing the visitor to experience the harbor’s vibrancy not only visually but also through an auditory immersion.

This sound installation invites contemplation of the intersections between personal journeys and the collective narrative, between solitude and shared spaces. Drawing deeply from Gothenburg’s heritage, it reflects on the harbor’s role in shaping the city’s identity and communal spirit.

Offering a unique vantage point, the installation reveals not just the harbor’s constant activity but also our place within it. It challenges us to consider our own harbors in life—the values, relationships, and aspirations that provide refuge and direction. The visible maritime ballet intertwines with our personal quest for belonging, identity, and home.

I Dock also becomes a metaphor for the gallery itself—a space of movement, exploration, and interconnected stories. As you navigate this vertical axis through the stairs, it invites you to ponder the ports of call in your life that provide solace and meaning in a world characterized by perpetual motion and connection.

By situating the visitor within sight of the harbor’s comings and goings, the installation creates a direct link between the external environment and the internal reflections it inspires, highlighting our shared human experience amid the ceaseless rhythm of life and community.

I Dock is commissioned by Röda Sten Konsthall, Gothenburg, Sweden.

“[…] One of the works that most tangibly connects to the surrounding environment is Cha Blasco’s “I Dock”, a sound piece flowing through the staircase between floors.

The title evokes the modern reality of technology, reminiscent of the iPhone or Isaac Asimov’s dystopia I, Robot. This creates a striking reflection of the work’s essence—a link between the harbor’s present and its history.

In “I Dock”, visitors hear individually recorded sound signals from all ships passing through the harbor within a four-kilometer radius. […] – Göteborgs Posten”
