This soundtrack is a sound-music journey I made for the Norwegian documentary film A Beehive In My Heart which premiered in December 2019 at Kunstnernes Hus in Oslo. Many of the instruments and textures used within the score were synthesized from the original organic sounds and field recordings heard in the film. Capturing these elements recorded at the small Spanish-Catalan village Òdena where local beekeeper Josep Maria García works was a crucial aspect for the sound design, colour, and identity for this music.
The record is divided into nine different interconnected electronic meditations which gives a dramaturgical journey congruent with the film and follows Garcia’s narration about the struggles against the culture surrounding the chemical pesticide industry, magnetic field fluctuations among other problems bees are facing, and how all these aspects have a detrimental impact on the lives of bees. The role of bees is crucial for our agriculture and the ecological sustainability of life on Earth.
The American cellist Jen Mulhern brings a strong organic dose to the otherwise synthetic production; melting with each other in a perfect harmonic fusion. While providing additional sound design elements, the music is mixed and produced in collaboration with multi-instrumentalist and producer Adrian Benavides.
All proceeds of this record are donated to several international organizations that advocate for bees worldwide.
