“Turtleyou! is a visual, idea stimulating solo perception of meat, in the broad sense. It can be seen as a movement oriented staging of the recipe “Authentic Sköldpaddssoppa” from the old norwegian cookbook “Great Kogebog” and consists of a mixture of choreography, improvisation, spoken word, recorded text and video projections.
The visual elements switch between illustrating and contrasting or contradicting the text and so open up the content of words and various subtlties arise. This grotesque visual recipe acts as a kind of springboard for putting in motion the audience’s conceptions about themes such as meat consumption, power, similarities and differences between humans and animals, objectification, the fashion industrys consumption of the female body, and about the parallels between these different, although, related themes.
Turtleyou! Inspired by the book “The Sexual Politics of Meat-A Feminist-Vegetarian Critical Theory” by Carol J. Adams.
The show realised and choreographed by Annika Vestel, and played at Abundance International Dance Festival in Karlstad last year. Now, Turtleyou! playing at Atalante it is an even more developed and elaborated version and has also received a brand new soundtrack composed by the spanish, Gothenburg based composer Cha Blasco.”
